ChatGPT Plus or an API key: which costs you less?
A subscription is a flat monthly price; an API key is paid per use. How to tell which fits how you use AI, and how to use both.

There are two ways to pay for a strong AI model. A subscription such as ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro is a flat monthly price for the provider's own app. An API key is pay-per-use: every request is billed by its size. Which one costs you less depends on how you use AI, not on which is "cheaper" in general.
How each one charges
- A subscription costs the same every month whether you send ten messages or a thousand, within the provider's usage limits. You use it in the provider's own app.
- An API key is billed per request, by the amount of text in and out (tokens) and by the model. A short question on a light model costs a tiny amount; a long document on the strongest model costs much more. You use it in any app or tool that accepts a key.
Prices change often, so compare with the numbers on each provider's own pricing page, not with numbers in an article.
Which fits you
A subscription usually fits when you:
- chat every day, much of it long back-and-forth;
- mostly use one provider's app;
- want one predictable number on the card.
A key usually fits when you:
- use AI in bursts, or only some weeks;
- want several providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI) without several subscriptions;
- use AI inside other tools, scripts or a shop;
- want to pick a lighter model for simple tasks and pay accordingly.
The risk of a key is a surprise bill. That is a solvable problem: see how to cap your AI API spending.
You do not have to choose
Many people keep the subscription they like and add a key for the rest. Cortex66 works with both: it uses your own keys first, connects the ChatGPT and Claude you already use, and shows a receipt with the most a task can cost before it runs, so a key never surprises you.

FAQ
Is the ChatGPT API cheaper than ChatGPT Plus?
It depends on how much you use it. Light or occasional use often costs less on a key; heavy daily chat often fits a subscription.
Does ChatGPT Plus include API access?
No. The subscription and the API are billed separately; an API key has its own pay-per-use billing.
Can I use my own API key in a chat app?
Yes, many apps accept a key. In Cortex66 your keys are used first, with a cost cap checked before each task.
How do I avoid a surprise API bill?
Set your provider's limits and alerts, use one key per tool, and cap each task before it runs.
